Strictly’s Chris McCausland: The Hilarious Warning from His Wife and Challenges of Being a Blind Dad

Chris McCausland’s Wife Warned Him About ‘Embarrassing’ Her, But Did He Listen?

Comedian and Strictly Come Dancing star Chris McCausland has quickly become a fan favourite on this year’s series of the BBC One show. Today (October 26), he’ll be back on our screens with his dance partner Dianne Buswell to perform their latest routine.

But away from the glitz and glamour of the dance floor, Chris enjoys a happy family life with his Brazilian wife Patricia and their 10-year-old daughter, Sophie. However, earlier this year, Chris shared a humorous story about “embarrassing” his beloved wife while performing on stage.

Before dazzling viewers on Strictly, Chris made his name as a comedian, performing to sell-out audiences around the world. Yet, his wife Patricia – to whom he’s been married for 12 years – has one strict rule: keep the stand-up routine free from anything “too embarrassing.”

Chris explained in an interview with Disability Horizons in 2024 that Patricia doesn’t attend every show, which gives him a bit more freedom with his material. He joked: “I suppose that because she doesn’t come along to watch every show, I can say what I want really – just not on the telly!”

Being a Blind Dad: Chris on His Journey with Daughter Sophie

Chris and Patricia, who is a psychologist, married in 2012 and live in London with their daughter. He has often opened up about the unique challenges and joys of fatherhood, particularly as a blind parent.

Chris lost his sight fully at age 22 due to a hereditary condition called retinitis pigmentosa. Reflecting on early fatherhood, he described a challenging period when Sophie was a toddler: “There was a really difficult period when she was a one year old, where she was mobile but silent, crawling about on the floor but hardly making a bloody peep!”

As Sophie grew older, some challenges became easier, though others took their place. Chris humorously noted that as she began reading and writing, he sometimes struggled to keep up. “How many of the other kids in her class have already got better handwriting than their Daddy?” he quipped.

Catch Chris McCausland on Strictly Come Dancing tonight (October 26) at 6:25 pm on BBC One.
